Backlunds launch limited-edition hoodie to raise money for ALS Society of Alberta

Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund and his wife Frida have launched a new fundraiser for the ALS Society of Alberta.

The ALS Society of Alberta is getting some high-profile help with a new fundraising initiative.

Frida Backlund, the wife of Calgary Flames captain Mikael Backlund, designed a limited-edition hoodie with half the proceeds supporting ALS patients and research in Alberta.

The couple has held several fundraisers for ALS, inspired by Frida’s mother, who died of the neurodegenerative disease at the age of 49.

“I think of her every day, but Mother’s Day is especially tough, of course,” Frida told CTV News.

Mikael Backlund won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy in 2023 for his leadership qualities on and off the ice and his humanitarian work in the community.

Frida says their community efforts come naturally in a city they’ve embraced.

“We definitely consider it our home,” she says. “It’s a great city, great people. I remember just moving here and I thought, everyone’s so friendly.”

The hoodies, titled “Memory in Bloom,” are available on Alberta Apparel’s website.
