ASIRT confirms knife found at Bridgeland scene after officer fatally shot suspect

The Albert Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) confirms an investigation is underway into Monday night’s fatality in Bridgeland where a plainclothes officer fatally shot a civilian in the chest.

According to ASIRT, the officer had an unexpected encounter with the suspect near the intersection of 2 Avenue and 6 Street N.E. at approximately 11:30. The confrontation escalated and the constable fired a single shot, from close proximity, that stuck the man in the upper chest.

EMS and additional police resources were deployed to the scene but attempts to treat the man proved unsuccessful and he succumbed to his injuries.

The officer was not seriously injured in the ordeal.

ASIRT official confirm a folding knife with its blade exposed was recovered from the scene.

The deceased has been identified as a 26-year-old man from Calgary who was out on bail with conditions that he may not possess weapons including knives. Neither ASIRT nor the Calgary Police Service have released the name of the deceased.
