‘A treasure to this community’: Fritz Sick Pool reopens following renovations

Fritz Sick Pool has reopened after undergoing extensive renovations to bring the facility up to accessibility standards over the past few months.

A much more accessible Fritz Sick Pool has reopened.

The pool has undergone extensive renovations to bring the facility up to accessibility standards over the past few months.

Built in the 1950s, the pool now includes barrier-free showers and toilet stalls, more showers, widened access points to the pool, a larger lobby and non-slip floors.

“Fritz pool is a treasure to this community and is well-loved by the people that use it, so it was very important that we fix the changerooms (and) we do some upgrading, so that it has a longer life (and) it offers more to the public,” said Sunni Belle, Recreation Excellence Lethbridge general manager.

“It was originally built as an outdoor pool. A lot of the configuration of the changerooms and everything is all original, so it did not meet accessibility standards at all so we wanted to upgrade it from a life-cycle perspective to make it more accessible to the community,” said Robin Harper, City of Lethbridge recreation and culture general manager.

The total cost of the renovations was just over $1 million.
