‘A collaborative future’: City of Calgary, Blackfoot Confederacy sign historic agreement

A “memorandum of understanding on communication and co-operation” has been signed by the City of Calgary and nations of the Blackfoot Confederacy.

The historic agreement was penned Friday.

It isn’t a legally binding document but is meant to represent commitment from the city and the Blackfoot nations of Kainai, Piikani and Siksika to work together in areas such as environmental sustainability, economic opportunity and cultural advancement.

Calgary’s mayor called the agreement meaningful and long overdue.

“It reflects the trust we have built over time and our shared commitment to move forward together,” said Jyoti Gondek.

“This memorandum of understanding lays a strong foundation for open communication and joint action on the priorities we share.”

Piikani Nation’s chief called the relationship between the city and the Blackfoot people an enduring one, dating back to the origins of Fort Calgary.

“With Mohkinstsis (Calgary) located within our ancestral territory, this agreement symbolizes a commitment to mutual respect, co-operation and the preservation of our shared history,” said Troy Knowlton.

“Together, we look forward to a collaborative future that reflects the strength of our longstanding relationship.”
