Police recovered a stick of dynamite and detonating wires on the property of a home that exploded Friday in central New Brunswick, killing one person.

RCMP Sgt. Bruce Reid said the items were recovered Friday, metres from where the home was completely levelled in Sussex Corner, a community northeast of Saint John.

"(The dynamite) didn't have anything attached to it, it was just a stick," he told The Canadian Press Sunday.

James Harvey Goddard, 53, was found dead on Sunday at the back of the home. The explosion mostly damaged the back part of the home, the resulting fire burned the rest of the home down.

Goddard's 51-year-old wife was injured in the blast but escaped the house and was later found outside.

Reid said Goddard has access to explosives through his work on construction sites.

"We're still investigating the explosion and we can't determine at this point exactly what caused it, all we do know is that he did work with explosives," he said

Reid said it was not known if the explosives recovered from near the home, were from Goddard's work.

Five homes were evacuated as a result of the explosion, which could be heard kilometres away. The homeowners have since been allowed to return to their homes.

Neighbour Melanie Hawethorne said the explosion was felt throughout the area.

"We heard a large boom, for lack of a better term. The house shook, it sounded basically like somebody had hit our mini-home, shook pictures off the wall, that kind of thing," she said Saturday.
