TORONTO -- Gay Lea Foods Co-operative Ltd, said Monday it has signed a deal to buy Salerno Dairy, a family-owned company that makes Italian cheese.

Financial terms of the deal for the Ontario-based company, which also imports products from Italy, were not immediately available.

Salerno has its main plant in Hamilton, as well as a warehouse and distribution centre in Montreal and a manufacturing plant in Hannon, Ont.

The company's brands include Salerno and Gos and Gris.

It employs a total of 185 people,

Gay Lea Foods is Ontario's largest dairy co-operative with products under the Gay Lea, Nordica and Ivanhoe Cheese brands.
