MONTREAL -- Air Transat is abolishing 47 positions in an administrative restructuring that has seen the appointment of a new leader for the leisure airline.

Tour operator Transat A.T. (TSX:TRZ.B) said Thursday that the positions aren't needed following a simplification in the airline's administrative structure.

It said the change won't have an impact on customer service or operations.

Jean-Francois Lemay immediately becomes general manager, replacing president Allen Graham, who retires June 30.

In addition to running the airline, Lemay will remain vice-president of human resources and talent management at the parent company.

Lemay is a long-serving Transat employee who joined its executive team in 2011.

Transat chief executive Jean-Marc Eustache said the new structure better adapts the airline to face future challenges.

The changes are part of Transat's 2011 plan to return to profitability in three years.

The company plans to increase pre-tax operating earnings by $50 million.

Among the changes, it is operating its own fleet of Boeing 737 aircraft after ending its subcontract with Canjet. It is also reducing the number of widebody aircraft in its fleet.
