HALIFAX - Bernard Lord, the former premier of New Brunswick, is joining Toronto-based law firm McCarthy Tetrault as a senior counsel.

Lord says he "entertained offers'' from several national and regional firms before accepting the position.

He says he'll keep his home in New Brunswick and will commute to several McCarthy Tetrault offices across the country.

Iain Scott, McCarthy Tetrault's chief executive, said the legal firm is looking forward to making use of Lord's expertise with public-private partnerships.

Lord spent a decade in provincial politics in New Brunswick, where he was premier for two back-to-back majority governments.

He stepped down as leader on Jan. 31.

McCarthy Tetrault has 700 lawyers practising in Canada's major financial centres, as well as London, England.
