Six years later: Investigation continues into the murder of Sonia Varaschin

It’s been six years since the murder of an Orangeville nurse and police are once again appealing to the public for help.

It was on Aug. 30, 2010 that a blood-stained Toyota Corolla belonging to Sonia Varaschin was found in an alley behind Orangeville town hall.

Police launched an investigation and on Sept. 5, 2010 her body was found by a citizen near Beechgrove Sideroad and Mountainview Road in Caledon. Her death was quickly ruled a homicide.

Varaschin would have celebrated her 48th birthday last month.

"It's important for people to remember that Sonia was the girl next door and we've said right from the very on set the community holds the key to solving this crime," says OPP Sgt. Peter Leon.

Over the past six years, police say they have received more than 1,000 tips. Investigators still believe someone has the one key piece of information that can solve this case.

A $50,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction is still being offered.

"Anything they may have seen or heard in recent time, it's very important to keep that information coming to our investigation team."

Anyone who may have a tip is encouraged to contact police or anonymously Crime Stoppers.

The OPP remain adamant they will catch their suspect.

"We have your DNA, look over your shoulder because the day will come when you will be arrested and held accountable for your actions."
