Large snapping turtle to be released in Midland after recovering from injury

A large snapping turtle found injured last summer in the marsh in Midland will get a new lease on life with his release back into the wild on Friday.

Staff with the Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre said the resilient reptile immediately received crucial treatment by North Simcoe Vets and was then transferred to the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre in Peterborough for further medical care and rehabilitation.

The Peterborough centre provides medical and rehabilitative care for injured turtles right across the province.

"After spending the winter healing at their facility, the turtle is now healthy, strong and ready to be released back into our marsh," staff at Wye March posted on social media Tuesday. "This is a special moment for our marsh community."

Volunteers and visitors are invited to join in watching the snapping turtle’s release on Friday at 10 a.m. at Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre on Highway 12 East in Midland.
