Innisfil police rescue struggling deer in Lake Simcoe waters

“Life-saving efforts take many forms. This time, it was a quiet call from nature that brought South Simcoe Police Service officers (SSPS) and a community member together to rescue a deer and bring it to safety,” the police service stated in a post on social media Monday.

Kim Austin, a local boater was out on Cook’s Bay, the southernmost bay of Lake Simcoe, enjoying the summer sun, when she came across a deer struggling in open waters.

Austin immediately contacted police in Innisfil in hopes of bringing the disoriented animal safely back to shore.

A team of officers arrived at the bay and helped the boater guide the deer onto dry land. Officers say the rescued animal is now resting in a safe location.

“It is always great to see when the community and police work together. We are grateful to have such caring community members who share our commitment to serving with compassion. The Ministry of Natural Resources has been called in to assist,” South Simcoe Police Sgt. Steve Black told CTV News.

SSPS made an effort to stress that, “this example is proof that compassion knows no species.”

“Thank you to the community member and our officers for working together to ensure the deer’s safety,” the SSPS team concluded on social media.
