Firefighters battled flames near train tracks in Huntsville

Firefighters battled a fire near train tracks in Huntsville just before the weekend.

The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department says nearly a dozen firefighters and four trucks responded to the call about a grass fire in the area of Avery Beach on Yonge Street North around 9 p.m. on Friday.

Officials say a pile of decommissioned wood railway ties caught on fire near the multiple rail cars that were carrying non-combustible and non-hazardous materials.

Fire crews knocked down the fire with the aid of heavy machinery that was used to separate the pile.

No rail cars or any nearby structures were damaged, but the fire did result in the closure of the railway for multiple hours.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
