Driver caught with open liquor and cannabis faces charges: OPP

A traffic complaint in the Town of Mono led to a roadside stop this week where officers allegedly discovered an allegedly impaired Shelburne man behind the wheel with open alcohol and cannabis readily available.

Police say a concerned motorist alerted officers to a vehicle being driven erratically on Wednesday evening on Airport Road. Officers tracked down the vehicle a short time later on Highway 89 in nearby Mulmur Township and conducted a traffic stop.

Police say they noticed obvious signs of impairment while speaking with the driver and launched a roadside investigation, which led to the arrest of the 26-year-old motorist. Police say further testing revealed the man’s blood alcohol concentration was above the legal limit.

In addition to the impaired driving charge, the motorist is also accused of operating a vehicle without valid insurance, presenting an invalid insurance card, driving with an open container of alcohol, and having cannabis readily available in the vehicle. Police also say he failed to update his change of address as required under the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused was also subject to a suspended licence and vehicle impoundment.

Provincial police are using this incident to remind motorists and passengers about the dangers and consequences of impaired driving. "Any amount of alcohol or drugs can impact your ability to make sound judgements. In a split second you could ruin your future, injure or kill others, and tear a hole in the heart of everyone who loves you."

Police urge residents to use a designated driver, take a cab or rideshare, use public transit or stay overnight rather than getting in a vehicle impaired.
