17-year-old driver charged with speeding 121 km/h in 60 zone: OPP

A 17-year-old faces serious charges after police say the G2 driver was nabbed speeding more than double the posted limit in Essa Township.

Nottawasaga OPP say the novice driver was travelling 121 kilometres per hour in a posted 60 km/h zone on County Road 90 on Sunday.

The teen was charged with speeding and stunt driving. A stunt driving charge carries an automatic 30-day licence suspension and 14-day vehicle impoundment at the owner’s expense.

“Speeding at excessive rates puts everyone at risk,” OPP stated in a social media post. "Drive responsibly and respect the speed limits - your life and the lives of others depend on it."

The young driver will have to appear in court at a later date to answer to the charge, which if convicted, comes with six demerit points, a minimum $2,000 fine, and a significant spike in insurance rates.

Additionally, the offence remains on a driver’s record for three years.
