BAKU, Azerbaijan - Authorities in Azerbaijan have dispatched special forces to quell unrest sparked by a demand for a provincial governor to resign.

Footage streamed online showed dozens of troops facing off Thursday against several hundred civilians in the town of Quba about 170 kilometres north of the capital, Baku. A cameraman was shown bleeding from a head wound.

Azerbaijani news website Contact.az said the construction of a home for the regional governor with funding set aside for the creation of a sports centre may have provoked anger among locals.

Local media reported that at least four people have been injured in the clashes.

Such large-scale unrest directed at officials in the authoritarian oil-rich ex-Soviet nation on Iran's northern border has not been seen for years.
