Celebration and sorrow as East Coast Music Week kicks off in St. John’s

The East Coast Music Awards have officially started in St. John’s.

The East Coast Music Awards officially launched in St. John’s, but the celebrations are taking place under a cloud of sadness following the sudden passing of a beloved figure in Newfoundland’s music community.

Mark Hiscock, the longtime accordion player and vocalist for Shanneyganock died unexpectedly this week. He was 53.

“Mark was a big, big loss — not just to the band, but to the entire tapestry of Newfoundland music,” said Con O’Brien of the Irish Descendants in an interview with CTV Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. “He influenced so many.”

Shanneyganock is still scheduled to perform during the week’s festivities, though Hiscock’s absence will be deeply felt.

“It’s put a somber mood over the week,” O’Brien said. “But we’ll celebrate him. The boys will get up there and play with him in their hearts.”

Despite the grief, organizers say the week is also a time to honour the strength and spirit of East Coast musicians. Michelle Eagles, chair of the East Coast Music Association, said more than 30 team members have travelled to Newfoundland for this year’s celebration.

“We are music,” said Eagles. “It’s part of who we are. You can hear music any day of the week in Newfoundland — it’s just so prevalent and magical here.”

This year’s ECMAs include dozens of performances, industry panels, and awards events, with artists and fans from across the region descending on the capital city to celebrate East Coast music.

And while this year’s event begins on a note of remembrance, it’s clear the week ahead will also be filled with pride, passion — and the unmistakable sound of Atlantic Canada.
