Man charged in connection to stolen vehicle: N.S. RCMP

Shelburne RCMP has charged a man with a number of stolen vehicle offences on Tuesday.

Police responded to a report of a stolen GMC Sierra truck in the Jordan Falls area at around 9:40 a.m. on Friday. Through the investigation, police identified two people of interest.

Some time later, police received a report of two people walking on Morgan Road near Shelburne which matched the description of the people of interest, according to a Tuesday news release from the RCMP.

Officers conducted patrols of the area immediately, leading to one of the persons of interest being located. During the interaction police say they learned the other person of interest was in possession of a firearm.

Police say they located the stolen vehicle abandoned on a side road near Shelburne around 12:40 p.m. Evidence from the vehicle was seized and the vehicle was returned to the owner.

After further investigation, police identified the suspect as 34-year-old Joseph Hayden of Jordan Ferry. He was located and arrested at a home on Sandy Point Road in Shelburne.

Police say Hayden was not in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest, but officers are investigating if a firearm seized on Monday at an unrelated call was used in this incident.

Hayden has been charged with:

• six counts of motor vehicle theft
• possession of property obtained by crime
• unauthorized possession of firearm
• possession of firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized

Hayden had his first court appearance on Saturday, and he was remanded into custody.

The other person identified as part of the investigation was also arrested and is facing a charge of possession of property obtained by crime. They were released pending a future court appearance.
