Man charged for assaulting officer, barricading himself in New Glasgow apartment: police

New Glasgow Regional Police says it has charged a man after he assaulted a police officer and barricaded himself inside an apartment Monday afternoon.

Officers responded to an apartment complex in New Glasgow to conduct a well-being check on a man around 1:20 p.m.

Police say the man opened the door and sprayed an irritant in an officer’s face before barricading himself inside.

Attempts were made to negotiate with the man to exit the apartment, which police say were initially unsuccessful.

RCMP, Stellarton Police Service, Emergency Health Services, the New Glasgow Fire Department, New Glasgow Public Works and Nova Scotia Power also responded to the scene.

Police secured the area and closed several streets as a precaution. New Glasgow Academy was also placed in a hold-and-secure position.

The man exited the apartment complex and was taken into custody just before 4 p.m.

The 36-year-old-man from Pictou County has been charged with:

• assaulting a police officer with a weapon
• possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose

He has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Pictou provincial court.
