Gas leak in St. George, N.B., leads to home evacuations

A gas leak in St. George, N.B., caused several evacuations from homes on Wednesday afternoon.

Eastern Charlotte Mayor John Craig told CTV News Atlantic a contractor was repairing a broken water line on Clinch Street when a natural gas line was accidentally struck.

First responders shut down the road and began evacuating houses within a 100-metre radius of where the gas line was struck. The municipality has opened the Magaguadavic Place community centre for temporarily displaced residents.

Liberty Gas has been notified of the incident and officers with the New Brunswick RCMP are on site.

There is no word on how many residents were affected by the evacuation order or how long it will take to repair the leak.
