Woman assaulted, robbed near Fredericton park; police looking for suspect

A man allegedly assaulted and robbed a woman in Odell Park in Fredericton on Thursday.

Police in Fredericton are looking for a suspect after a woman was assaulted and robbed near Odell Park on Wednesday.

The Fredericton Police Force responded to the area around 12:15 p.m. They say a man approached the woman, assaulted her and stole her purse before fleeing on foot.

The woman sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police searched the park for the suspect with help from its drone unit and New Brunswick RCMP Police Dog Services.

During this time, Fredericton police posted on Facebook that they were “conducting an operation” in the park and asked people to avoid the area. They said at 1:30 p.m. that police were still on scene but people could return to the area and enter the park.

Police were not able to locate the suspect and they are asking for the public’s help in identifying him.

The suspect is described as being around 20 years old and five-foot-five. Police say he may be of Hispanic descent with a “unique professional hairstyle” and “a distinctive reptile tattoo extending up his neck.” He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt.

Police are asking anyone who was in or near Odell Park at the time to contact them. They are also asking anyone with a doorbell camera or other footage from the Shamrock Terrace or Smythe Street areas to check their recordings and call police if they see anything that may help with the investigation.
