Coroner’s inquest ordered for 2 N.B. inmates who died due to drug toxicity

A coroner’s inquest will examine two New Brunswick inmates who died in Edmundston more than three years ago.

Wesley Geneau and Jarrett Lunn, who were both inmates at the Madawaska Correctional Centre, died at the Edmundston Regional Hospital on Feb. 6, 2022 and April, 9, 2022, respectively, according to a news release from the New Brunswick government.

Their deaths were said to be caused due to combined drug toxicity.

A previous news release said Geneau, 40, was found unresponsive at the correctional centre and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Deputy chief coroner Emily Caissy and a jury will determine the facts of the deaths by hearing evidence from witnesses. The jury will also be able to make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.

The inquest will not make any finding of legal responsibility.

The inquest is scheduled to run from June 9 to 13 at the Edmundston courthouse.
