Renowned New Brunswick heart surgeon and former MLA Dr. Jim Parrott has died.

Parrott was elected as a Conservative MLA in 2010 for Fundy-River Valley. He clashed with former Premier David Alward over the provincial government’s policies on health care and bilingualism before being expelled from the Conservative Party caucus in 2012.

Parrott is also remembered for being the leading force behind establishing the New Brunswick Heart Centre at the Saint John Regional Hospital as a centre of excellence.

In a tweet, interim New Brunswick Conservative Leader Bruce Fitch called Parrott a great MLA and doctor who saved many people.

Parrott was 74 years old.
