In footage released Thursday, U.K. police stop a speeding car driving the wrong way on a highway by crashing into it with their cruiser.

The dramatic nighttime scene, captured by the car’s dash-cam, unfolds from the officers’ point-of-view.

“He's going to hit, he's going to hit, he's going to hit us!" you can hear one of the officers shouting as the car flies towards them at an estimated 80 kilometres per hour.

“We've had to take this car out. Vehicle is stopped,” one officer radios after the blinding lights and a loud crunch of the collision. “Our vehicle is slightly damaged, unfortunately. He was coming too fast towards us.”

Police say a 77-year-old with dementia was behind the wheel of the wayward vehicle. The driver was uninjured in the incident.

The officers, one of whom sustained minor injuries in the crash, were commended by the Central Motorway Police Group.

"Traffic officers bravely took the decision to engineer a collision with the vehicle and I am sure that their selfless actions have prevented serious injury or worse to the driver and other motorists on the road," said a spokesperson for the group.
