CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuela's vice-president says that President Hugo Chavez is conscious and progressively recovering more than a week after cancer surgery in Cuba.
Nicolas Maduro says in a televised speech that Chavez is doing well following the complicated surgery. Maduro also reiterated that Chavez is, in his words, "fighting a great battle ... for his life, for his health."
Maduro read a statement during a speech in central Guarico state, saying Chavez has continued with "complete rest" and treatment for a respiratory infection.
