TAIPEI, Taiwan - A strong earthquake has been felt throughout Taiwan, but no casualties or damage has been reported yet.

The Central Weather Bureau says the quake Wednesday registered at magnitude 6.1.

The tremor struck a rural township in Nantou County, about 250 kilometres (about 155 miles) south of Taipei where it swayed buildings.

Earthquakes frequently rattle Taiwan, but most are minor and cause little or no damage.

However, a magnitude-7.6 earthquake in central Taiwan in 1999 killed more than 2,300 people.
