RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Squatters in Rio de Janeiro are clashing with police after a Brazilian court ordered that 5,000 people be evicted from abandoned buildings of a telecommunications company.

Police moved in early Friday to move people out of the buildings owned by the telecom Oi. Some families left peacefully.

But many others fought police and set fire to parts of the building, a bus and a police cruiser. The vehicles of local TV stations were attacked. The O Globo newspaper reports that three people have been injured so far, but police couldn't confirm that figure.

Officers have used tear gas and stun grenades to try to disperse the families.

Authorities say the squatters have been removed from the building, but groups of people continue clashing with police in the surrounding area.
