The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with their two children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, have arrived in Canada.

The Royal Family has dozens of events planned during its eight-day visit and will meet thousands of Canadians along the way.

What to expect

Royal Commentator Victoria Arbiter says this royal tour will be different than ones in the past. She expects it to be much more informal and relaxed.

"One of the palace aides has already said not to expect tiaras and show-stopping jewels. That’s not William and Kate’s style," Arbiter says. "We’ll really see that lovely personal interaction that people enjoy from them when they’re on tour."

Instead, Arbiter suspects the tour will be focused on the causes the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are passionate about.

"There’ll be a focus on mental health, the welfare of young people, addiction, there’s an event with military families, sailing.  And we’ll also see them enjoying their passion, which Canada is perfect for, that being the great outdoors. So there’s a fishing trip planned, there’s a trip to Montana Mountain and they’ll take an aerial tour of the Great Bear Rainforest in a float plane."

Key dates:

According to a news release from Canadian Heritage, the official welcome will be held on Sept. 24 in Victoria before continuing on to Vancouver. The tour will end eight days later on Oct. 1.

  • Sept. 24: Victoria, B.C.

The Duke and Duchess will arrive at the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia on Saturday afternoon where there wil be a wreath laying ceremony followed by a welcome dance performed by the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations and military honours where the Duke of Cambridge will address Canadians.

  • Sept. 25: Vancouver, B.C.

Events in Vancouver include a stop at the Jack Poole Plaza and Olympic Cauldron, followed by a tour of Sheway and then a ceremonial First Nations welcome and prayer. The Royal couple will also meet young Canadians who are making significant community contributions, as well as first responders including police, coast guard and ambulance services members.

Prime Minister Jusin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau will also be on hand for some of the events on Sept. 24 and 25.

  • Sept. 26: Bella Bella, B.C.

Events include a First Nations welcome at breakwater, followed by a tour of the Wawiskas Community Hall and Elders lodge. There will also be a dedication announcement for the Great Bear Rainforest.

  • Sept. 27: Victoria and Kelowna, B.C.

Events include a visit to the University of British Columbia Okanagan and a tour of the Mission Hill Family Estate, where the royal couple will view the vineyard and then take part in the Taste of British Columbia Festival.

  • Sept. 28: Whitehorse and Carcross, Yukon

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will meet children taking part in an Indigenous language program at the MacBride Museum of Yukon History. This will be followed by a viewing of the Healing Totem Pole and a meeting with members of Bring Youth Toward Equality (BYTE). The couple will then take part in a community street festival on Main Street, before moving on to Carcross.  There will be a traditional welcome ceremony which will include a dance by the Dakhka Khwaan Dancers, followed by a walk to the Carving Shed where they will meet a carver working on traditional Inland Tlingit and Tagish totems. This will be followed by a tour of the Montana Mountain site.

  • Sept. 29: Victoria, B.C.

The Royal tour includes a visit with the Military Family Resource Centre and a children's event at Government House.

  • Sept. 30: Haida Gwaii, B.C.

The Royal Couple is expected to take a canoe trip from Skidegate Landing to the Haida Heritage Centre and Museum. They will be accompanied by Haida warrior paddlers, drummers and Elders. They will then tour the Haida Heritage Centre, the Haida Gwaii Hospital and take a boat ride on the Highlander Ranger.

  • Oct. 1: Victoria, B.C.

The royal tour will conclude in Victoria with the family visiting the Cridge Centre for the Family and a meeting with Kelty Mental Health Resources Centre. They'll then set sail with members of the Sail and Life Training Society.
