SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Puerto Rico's Justice Department says it has solved the killing of a young boy in an upscale neighbourhood six years ago -- a case that transfixed and angered many in the U.S. territory.
Authorities on Tuesday charged a one-armed drifter in the killing of 8-year-old Lorenzo Gonzalez. Luis Gustavo Rivera Seijo is being held on $3 million bond.
The announcement surprised many because former government officials had said they had evidence against the boy's mother. Ana Cacho lost custody of her two daughters as a result of those suspicions. It is unclear if she will now regain custody of them.
Justice Secretary Cesar Miranda said help from the FBI and new evidence in the case led to the charges.
Defence attorney Mario Moczo says his client is innocent.
