China's escalation of a dispute with Japan over eight uninhabitable islands that cover a total area of just seven square kilometres has renewed interest in the long-simmering territorial conflict.
Citing national security, China declared a new maritime air defence zone in the East China Sea on Nov. 23, and began demanding that passing aircraft identify themselves and accept Chinese instructions for flights there.
