NEW BATAAN, Philippines -- Officials say the death toll in a powerful typhoon that lashed the southern Philippines has risen to at least 325 as rescuers search through mud and debris for another 379 people missing.

The Office of Civil Defence reported Thursday that more bodies had been retrieved from the hardest-hit provinces of Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental, as well as six other provinces.

At least 184 of the victims died in Compostela Valley when Typhoon Bopha struck Tuesday.

That includes 78 villagers and soldiers who perished in a flash flood that swamped two emergency shelters and a military camp.
