1. Deadline looms: The deadline for both a Japanese hostage and a captured Jordanian pilot has been extended until today. Jordan’s government says it is willing to make a deal with the Islamic State group, provided the pilot is still safe.

2. Boil away: Winnipeg residents still need to boil their water as a boil-water advisory hangs over the city. While E. coli and other bacteria don’t appear to be in the water, a preliminary ban remains in place.

3. Jail time: A British Columbia dog walker was sentenced to six months in jail on Wednesday for the deaths of six dogs in her. Emma Paulsen had originally told the dogs’ owners that the pets had been stolen from her truck before the animals were found in a ditch.

4. Punching your ticket: The Supreme Court of Canada could decide today if a Quebec man is owed $27-million after he purchased two tickets within seven seconds of one another. Joel Ifergan purchased the tickets back in 2008 and has been fighting for the jackpot ever since.

5. Record breaking: This year’s Bell’s Let’s Talk initiative surpassed last year’s donation total, raising money for mental health initiatives across Canada. An official total has not yet been released.
