SYDNEY, N.S. - An annual report on the remediation of the Sydney tar ponds site says an odour stemming from the project is "possibly not" a risk to public health.
The Nova Scotia government released the report today by the Remediation Monitoring Oversight Board.
The board says 49 of 50 complaints it received about the project last year were about odour from the ponds, which held 700,000 tonnes of toxic sludge from a century of steelmaking in Sydney.
But the board says air monitoring results were satisfactory based on health and toxicology limits.
It says while "possibly not a health risk," the odour is a nuisance and therefore perceived by the community as a risk.
The report says Nova Scotia's Environment Department is adequately monitoring the project.
