The Toronto Blue Jays might just receive some divine intervention as they head into the playoffs.

Decked out in blue and white, Calgary Pastor John Van Sloten gave a Jays-themed sermon at New Hope Church in Brentwood this weekend.

He said baseball – a game where people from all over the world come together to play – is a good metaphor for a Christian life.

“It’s a game made up of players of all shapes and sizes, and that’s a pointer to a world full of people of all shapes and sizes,” Van Sloten explained.

“We believe God made the human beings that came up with the idea of baseball,” he said. And so,somewhere in this game, there are fingerprints or whispers of the divine nature.”

This isn’t the first unusual subject matter Van Sloten has used in a sermon. In the past, he’s discussed the family dynamics of The Simpsons, and the music of Metallica.

The pastor’s message resonated with churchgoer Lindy Bowler.

“I think some of the things he talked about today just with the geometry of baseball, and the timing, and the way things come together, opened my eyes,” Bowler said, noting that her husband is a big fanof the Jays.

While Van Sloten said believers can draw inspiration from the Jays’ success, he isn’t claiming that God is rooting for the team – onlythat he may be watching over them.
