David and Tanya Idzan may have been the only Oilers fans to walk away from Rogers Place with a smile on their face after Wednesday night’s 3-2 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks.

The couple pocketed a cool $336,995 from the 50/50 jackpot. The Oilers Entertainment Group says it’s the largest win in the draw’s history.

Tanya told CTV Edmonton that she and her husband typically spend between $20 and $40 on the draw per game. The season ticket holders decided to splurge on $80 worth at Wednesday’s game.

Tanya said she was in shock as the announcer called out the winning number.

“We were both screaming. You never think you are going to win that amount of money,” she said.

Wednesday night’s bounty swelled by an extra $76,125 because nobody came forward to claim the prize after the March 25 draw.

The playoff excitement must have encouraged people to open their wallets. Natalie Minckler of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation said the demand was so powerful that organizers were forced to shut down sales in order to make sure all the tickets could be printed for the draw.

“Fans were purchasing an awful lot of tickets, so we had a longer print queue than normal. We needed to allow that print queue to go down so we could stay within our license requirement with 50/50 and make the announcement during the third period,” Minckler said.

Tanya said she and her husband don’t have plans for the windfall yet, but travel, bills, and a new car could be in the cards.
