DUNEDIN, Fla. -- Russell Martin hit a long home run, AL MVP Josh Donaldson drove in a run and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Baltimore Orioles 4-3 Friday.

Martin connected off prospect Andrew Triggs in the fourth inning with an opposite-field drive that landed far beyond the right-centre field fence.

Two pitches later, Justin Smoak made it back-to-back homers with his second in as many days, a drive to almost the same spot. Dalton Pompey, competing for a starting outfield spot, followed two batters later with a homer to right that chased the 26-year-old Triggs.

"It was a perfect day for that, wasn't it?" Toronto manager John Gibbons said of his team's power surge.

Donaldson had an RBI single in the third that scored Ryan Goins.

Baltimore's Mark Trumbo homered off Brad Penny in the fourth. Jonathan Schoop added an RBI single in the fifth.

Making his first spring-training start, Toronto's J.A. Happ allowed two hits in two scoreless innings.

"You've been competing against yourself all off-season, mentally and physically, and to get out there against different uniform is always fun," he said.

STARTING TIME

Orioles: Vance Worley walked one and struck out one in two innings. The right-hander, ying for a spot on Baltimore's opening-day roster, threw 36 pitches, including 25 for strikes.

"They've seen me from the other side, so they know what I'm capable of," he said. "To have it on their side might be a little different. I'm trying to show my best effort out there, utilize my defence back there because I know we can pick it."

TRAINER'S ROOM

Orioles: INF/OF Jimmy Paredes bruised a bione in his right wrist diving for a fly ball in Thursday's 10-3 loss at Tampa Bay. Paredes had an MRI on Friday.

"When that happened, I knew it was pretty bad because I couldn't feel my hand (or) wrist," Paredes said in Sarasota. "I was scared a little bit. But after a couple of seconds I could feel my hand and feel like everything is good Now, I feel a little better."

Manager Buck Showalter declined to speculate whether Paredes could play in the remaining four weeks of spring training.

"It's going to be a while," Showalter said.

Left-hander Brian Matusz is out after an MRI on Thursday revealed an injury to the serratus muscle in the right side of his back. Showalter said that if this had been the regular season, Matusz would be on the disabled list.

Blue Jays: LHP Aaron Loup won't pitch for two weeks for two weeks after an MRI revealed a strained flexor tendon in his elbow.

The 28-year-old, who had a 4.46 ERA with 46 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings last season, said he initially felt his forearm tighten while throwing batting practice last Friday. He tested it again on Thursday after five days of rest, but still experienced some discomfort. Loup hopes to be ready for opening day, but Gibbons said that might be a stretch. "I don't want to say no, but that might be real tough," he said.

RHP Marco Estrada, sidelined with lingering back soreness, threw off a mound for the first time. He said he should be ready to pitch in a game after two or three more bullpen sessions.

TULO TIME

Toronto shortstop Troy Tulowitzki had a quiet spring training debut, but the five-time All-Star said it felt good to play in a game.

Tulowitzki walked and grounded into a double play in two plate appearances and helped turn an inning-ending double play in the second.

"You want to get the firsts out of the way," he said. "The first (at-bat), the first ground ball - whatever it is (and) get the jitters out a little bit. Even though it's spring training, it's the first time you've been on the field in a while."

UP NEXT

Orioles: RHP Kevin Gausman is scheduled to make his first start of the spring on Saturday when a Baltimore split-squad hosts the Rays in Sarasota. The 2012 first-round draft pick was 4-7 with a 4.25 ERA in 17 starts and eight relief appearances last season.

Blue Jays: Drew Hutchison gets the start against the Phillies on Saturday in Dunedin. The right-hander allowed a homer and hit a batter in two innings of relief during a 5-3 victory over Philadelphia in Tuesday's exhibition opener.
