LONDON -- Dougie Fife scored with no time remaining to lift Scotland to a historic 27-26 over favoured South Africa in the final of the London Sevens on Sunday.
It was the first Cup final for Scotland, which had never finished higher than fourth before on the HSBC World Series. It was the 45th final for South Africa, which had won 22 times on the circuit.
Fiji, which sealed its second straight overall season title by reaching the Cup quarter-finals Saturday, finished fourth after losing 26-19 to the U.S. The Americans, sixth in the season standings, won the event in London last season.
New Zealand won the Plate final to finish fifth, defeating Argentina 29-14. Wales downed Australia 24-19 to take the Bowl and place ninth. Kenya thumped Russia 31-7 to win the Shield and finish 13th.
Canada defeated Brazil 19-7 before losing 21-17 to Wales in the Bowl semifinal to finish tied for 11th at the tournament. The Canadian men ended the season in 13th place, after finishing ninth last season and sixth the previous one.
South Africa finished second in the overall standings, ahead of New Zealand, Australia and Argentina. Scotland, which trailed 26-15 in the final, was 10th.
Eleven teams will now begin preparations for the Rio Olympics. Canada and 15th others will head to Monaco next month for a last-ditch Olympic qualifying tournament to decide which team joins them.
The Canadian men led the Welsh 17-7 at the half on tries by Justin Douglas and Harry Jones, only to see the Welsh score two unanswered tries in the second half.
Jones scored two tries and captain John Moonlight added another in the win over Brazil.
On Saturday, Canada lost to South Africa to extend its losing streak to 12 matches. But then it upset Samoa 24-19 and tied the U.S. 12-12, denied advancing to the Cup quarter-finals on a tiebreaker for the third time this season.
