ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Angels used eight pitchers -- a franchise record for a nine-inning game -- in a 2-0 victory over Oakland on Saturday night that increased their AL West lead over the Athletics to four games.

The deficit is the largest for the A's this season. They led the division by four games on Aug. 9 before going on their current 6-13 slide. Their only hits were infield singles by Josh Donaldson in the first and fourth, and a single by Sam Fuld in the ninth.

Cory Rasmus made his first major league start for the Angels in place of Garrett Richards, out for the season because of a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. The 26-year-old right-hander threw 49 pitches over three innings, matching his longest stint in 43 relief appearances over two big league seasons.

Yoslan Herrera (1-1) got the win in the Angels' fifth consecutive victory. Huston Street recorded three outs for his 11th save.

Jeff Samardzija (4-4) went the distance for Oakland, allowing four hits while striking out eight.

WHITE SOX 6, TIGERS 3, GAME 1

TIGERS 8, WHITE SOX 4, GAME 2

CHICAGO -- Kyle Ryan pitched six scoreless innings in his major league debut, and the Tigers salvaged a split of a day-night doubleheader with a potentially costly victory.

Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera pulled up lame while running out a grounder in the fourth inning, forcing him from the game. The All-Star has been dealing with a sore right ankle.

In the opener, Chris Sale struck out a season-high 13, beating Max Scherzer in a matchup of All-Star aces and leading Chicago to a 6-3 win.

Ezequiel Carrera, Don Kelly and Ian Kinsler each had three hits for Detroit in the nightcap. Ryan (1-0) allowed five hits and walked two.

Promoted from Double-A Birmingham prior to the game, White Sox right-hander Chris Bassitt (0-1) allowed five runs and seven hits in 6 1-3 innings in his major league debut.

Sale (11-3) struck out at least 10 for the 17th time in his career, tying Hall of Famer Ed Walsh for the franchise record. The lanky left-hander reached that figure in 81 major league starts -- Walsh made 312 for the White Sox from 1904-1916.

Jake Petricka pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer and Tyler Flowers also went deep against Scherzer (15-5), who fanned 11 and walked none in 6 2-3 innings. But he was touched up for six runs, five earned, and nine hits in the makeup of a June 10 rainout.

INDIANS 3, ROYALS 2, 11 INNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Michael Brantley and Carlos Santana each had an RBI single in the 11th inning as Cleveland earned its third consecutive win.

Kansas City has lost three in a row to fall into a first-place tie with Detroit, which split a doubleheader at Chicago. Cleveland is just 3 1/2 back in the bunched AL Central.

The Royals got a run back in the bottom of the 11th when Salvador Perez's two-out double scored Jarrod Dyson. But Erik Kratz struck out to end the game.

Jose Ramirez sparked Cleveland's winning rally with a leadoff triple. Brantley followed with a base hit against Scott Downs (0-4).

Josh Tomlin (6-8) got the win.

ORIOLES 3, TWINS 2

BALTIMORE -- Chris Davis hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the seventh for Baltimore, and Jimmy Paredes homered.

The Orioles have won five of their past six games and lead the Yankees by eight games in the AL East. The Twins have lost 10 of their past 14 games.

Paredes, who was called up from the minors Thursday, went 2 for 4 with his first homer and had two RBIs. Davis is batting just .188, but has five RBIs in his past two games.

Andrew Miller (5-5) got the win and Zach Britton pitched a perfect ninth for his 30th save.

Jared Burton (2-3) was charged with the loss.

The Orioles also made a pair of trades, acquiring outfielder Alejandro De Aza from the Chicago White Sox and infielder Kelly Johnson in a deal with Boston.

GIANTS 3, BREWERS 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- Jake Peavy took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, leading San Francisco to the win.

The right-hander got the first out of the eighth on a nice backhand grab by third baseman Pablo Sandoval. Mark Reynolds fought off a 1-2 pitch and flared it just over the head of Joe Panik into right field for the first Brewers hit.

Peavy (3-4) received a standing ovation from the crowd after the no-hitter was broken up. He struck out Jean Segura and was taken out of the game.

Santiago Casilla worked the ninth, giving up an RBI single to Ryan Braun, for his 13th save.

Mike Fiers (4-2) struck out nine in seven innings for Milwaukee.

Will Venable started the winning rally with a single to centre off Jamey Wright (4-4) and stole second as pinch-hitter Rymer Liriano struck out. Amarista then lofted a single into centre field and Venable slid in headfirst just ahead of the throw.

Padres manager Bud Black was ejected in the top of the 10th for arguing a call that Yasiel Puig checked his swing.

Rafael Soriano worked around two ninth-inning singles to earn his 30th save for the NL East leaders.

Dustin Ackley's home run chased Strasburg. Ackley was drafted No. 2 overall in 2009 -- directly behind the Washington phenom.

Roenis Elias (9-12) pitched six innings for Seattle, allowing two earned runs.

BLUE JAYS 2, YANKEES 0

TORONTO -- Drew Hutchison pitched seven innings for Toronto, and Jose Bautista homered for the fourth straight game.

Mark Teixeira's fourth-inning double was the only hit allowed by Hutchison (9-11), who walked two and struck out nine.

Aaron Sanchez retired all six batters he faced for his first major league save as the Blue Jays improved to 8-17 in August.

Bautista hit a two-out, two-run homer off Michael Pineda (3-3) in the first.

RAYS 7, RED SOX 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Jake Odorizzi and two Rays relievers combined on a one-hitter.

Coming off a start Monday night in which he gave up a career-high eight runs over four innings in a 9-1 loss at Baltimore, Odorizzi (10-11) allowed a fourth-inning single to Will Middlebrooks, three walks and struck out seven over seven innings.

Jeff Beliveau and Kirby Yates completed the one-hitter. Tampa Bay set a single-season team record with its 18th shutout this year.

Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia was removed from the game in the second inning due to concussion-like symptoms.

CUBS 5, CARDINALS 1, GAME 1

CARDINALS 13, CUBS 2, GAME 2

ST. LOUIS -- Matt Holliday homered twice and drove in five runs as St. Louis earned a split of a doubleheader.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for St. Louis, which won for just the third time in its past nine games. It's the most runs this season for the Cardinals and the first time in seven games they scored at least three runs. Their previous high was 10, which they did twice.

St. Louis' Marco Gonzales (1-2) gave up one run in a season-high six innings. Chicago's Tsuyoshi Wada (4-2) allowed four runs in six innings.

In the opener, Felix Doubront (1-0) pitched seven strong innings in his National League debut and Starlin Castro hit one of Chicago's three solo homers.

Atlanta had won three in a row. Aaron Harang (10-9) yielded four runs, three earned, and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings.

PIRATES 3, REDS 2

PITTSBURGH -- Neil Walker hit a three-run homer in the first inning, sending Pittsburgh to its fourth straight victory.

Walker's 18th home run put the Pirates ahead 3-0 against Alfredo Simon four batters into the game. Pittsburgh's winning streak matches its longest of the season.

Vance Worley (6-4) allowed two runs -- one earned -- and three hits in 6 1-3 innings to snap a career-worst, three-start skid. Mark Melancon pitched a perfect ninth for his 26th save.

Despite retiring 12 batters in a row between the third and sixth, Simon (13-9) fell to 1-6 since pitching in his first All-Star game last month.

Todd Frazier homered for the Reds, who lost their seventh road game in a row.

ASTROS 2, RANGERS 0

HOUSTON -- Houston's Scott Feldman pitched a three-hitter for his second major league shutout.

Feldman (8-10) struck out five and walked one in his fourth career complete game and second this month.

The three hits allowed matched a career best for Feldman, who also threw a three-hitter against San Diego on May 1, 2013. His other shutout was Sept. 6, 2013, against the Chicago White Sox.

Held hitless for the first five innings by Robbie Ross Jr., the Astros scored twice in the seventh off Phil Klein (0-2).

NEW YORK -- Ryan Howard drove in three runs for Philadelphia, and Marlon Byrd homered on his 37th birthday.
