Kylie Masse lowered her Canadian record in the women's 50-metre backstroke, then won the gold medal in the final on Friday at the Italian International swimming competition in Rome.

The Windsor, Ont., native clocked 27.67 seconds in the preliminaries to set a meet record and eclipse her previous national mark of 27.84 posted at the CIS Championships in February.

Masse finished the final in 27.82 seconds, with Slovakia's Katarina Listopadova coming second and Italy's Elena Gemo third.

Winnipeg's Chantal VanLandeghem took silver in the 50 freestyle in 24.71 seconds. Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands won the race in 24.28.

Audrey Lacroix of Pont-Rouge, Que., came third in the 200 butterfly in two minutes 9.93 seconds. Liliana Szilagyi of Hungary won gold in 2:08.55 while Italy's Stefania Pirozzi was second in 2:09.66.

At the Quebec Cup in Montreal, Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge posted wins in the 100 freestyle and 200 butterfly.

Savard took gold in a personal best 54.72 seconds in the 100 freestyle, almost a half-second ahead of American Siobhan Haughey. Montreal's Ariane Mainville was third.

Savard dominated the 200 butterfly race in 2:13.86.
