HAMBURG -- Voters in Hamburg are going to the polls in a referendum on the German port city's candidacy to host the 2024 Olympics.
About 1.3 million people in Hamburg and the nearby port city of Kiel, where sailing events would be held, are eligible to have their say at voting stations opened since 8 a.m. local time on Sunday.
More than 40 per cent of those eligible to vote have already done so through a postal ballot. A result was expected late Sunday.
Paris, Rome, Los Angeles and Budapest, Hungary, also are bidding for the 2024 Games. The IOC will select the host city in September 2017.
Germany has not staged an Olympics since the 1972 Summer Games in Munich. Munich's bid for the 2022 Winter Games was rejected in a referendum.
