TRIESTE, Italy - The Canadian men's water polo team will not be heading to the Rio Olympics this summer.

Canada dropped an 8-7 decision to Spain in quarter-final play at the Olympic qualification tournament on Friday.

The four semifinalists at the event will fill out the 12-team field in Rio.

Spain joins an Olympic field that includes Australia, Brazil, Croatia, Greece, Japan, Montenegro, Serbia and the United States.

Canada was unbeaten in round-robin play with three wins and two draws.

Hungary also earned a Rio berth with an 8-7 win over Germany. Later Friday, France was to meet the Netherlands and Romania was to play Italy.
