RIO DE JANEIRO -- Canada's Jacqueline Simoneau and Karine Thomas finished seventh in the synchronized swimming duet final at the Rio Olympics on Tuesday.

Simoneau, 19, of Saint-Laurent, Que., and Thomas, 27, of Gatineau, Que., were seventh after Monday's qualifying round, which earned them a score of 89.2916 for their technical routine.

They competed first in Tuesday's final, receiving 90.6000 for their free routine for an overall score of 179.8916.

Defending champions Natalia Ishchenko and Svetlana Romashina of Russia won the gold with an overall score of 194.9910.

China's Huang Xuechen and Sun Wenyan took silver, and Japan's Yukiko Inui and Risako Mitsui captured the bronze.

Simoneau and Thomas are double gold medallists from the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto, winning in the duet and team events, but the Pan Am competition didn't include most of the top swimmers in the world.

Thomas placed fourth in the team event at the 2012 London Olympics.
