TORONTO -- Canadian downhill skier Larisa Yurkiw says she is retiring after her most successful World Cup season.

After placing third in the downhill standings behind Lindsey Vonn and Fabienne Suter last season, the 28-year-old Yurkiw says she is unable to race at her limits after another knee surgery.

Yurkiw writes on her Instagram account that "It's time to say goodbye."

She adds: "However, I know in my heart, after yet another operation, health has the final say."

Yurkiw had three straight top-three finishes in downhill in Val d'Isere, France; Altenmarkt, Austria; and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, last season, then added two fourth places.

She raced independently of Canada's Alpine squad as self-funded Team Larisa on a budget of about $250,000 per year.
