KARLSTAD, Sweden - Canada crushed New Zealand 12-2 on Friday to advance to the quarter-finals of the world mixed doubles curling championship.
The Saskatoon duo of Dustin Kalthoff and Marliese Kasner scored four points in the first end, added a deuce in the third and tacked on three more points in the fifth end. New Zealand's Scott and Bridget Baker shook hands with the Canadians after seven ends.
"We just wanted to come out playing our best game, making those draw shots and making the runbacks when we needed," Kasner said. "That's what we did. We didn't look at whom we are playing, we were just making those shots and things worked out correct. So it was good."
Kalthoff threw at a 98 per cent clip while Kasner came in at 85 per cent. New Zealand's shot percentage was much lower with Scott Baker at 74 per cent and his partner at 57 per cent.
Canada won all six of its round-robin games and is now 7-0 overall.
Estonia, Russia, Scotland, England, China, Finland and the United States also won their opening games in the 16-team single-elimination playoff.
