RIO DE JANEIRO -- The women's freestyle relay squad took the first-medal pressure off the Canadian team Saturday in Rio with a bronze medal in the 4 x 100.

Sandrine Mainville of Boucherville, Que., Winnipeg's Chantal Van Landeghem, Taylor Ruck of Kelowna, B.C., and Toronto's Penny Oleksiak combined to end a 40-year medal drought in that event.

Canada's goal at the Rio Games is a top-12 ranking among countries in total medals won. The Canadian team totalled 18 medals -- including one gold -- four years ago in London.

The good:

-- The women's soccer team (2-0) booked a quarter-final berth with a 3-1 win over Zimbabwe in Sao Paulo.

-- The women's basketball opened with a win over China and the rugby sevens squad went 2-0.

-- Eugenie Bouchard of Westmount, Que., didn't waste time or energy winning her first-round tennis match 6-3, 6-3 over American Sloane Stephens.

The bad:

-- Victoria swimmer Ryan Cochrane missed out on the 400-metre freestyle final by four-tenths of a second.

-- Facing wild, windy conditions at Lagoa Stadium, a member of the men's quadruple sculls team lost an oar. They'll race a repechage Monday.

-- Canada dropped its men's field hockey opener 6-2 to Germany.

Ones to watch Sunday: Toronto swimmer Penny Oleksiak in the 100-metre butterfly; Calgary's Tara Whitten in the women's cycling road race; Jennifer Abel of Laval, Que., and Pamela Ware of Greenfield Park, Que., in synchronized springboard diving; Canada versus U.S. in men's volleyball.
