The official World Cup ball, the Brazuca, is fast becoming a social media sensation, having hit one million followers on Twitter over the weekend, with its online fan base rapidly expanding day by day.

Adidas celebrated the success of the first-ever World Cup match ball to have a Twitter account with a commemorative plaque, while German player Lukas Podolski recorded this unexpected personalized message of encouragement to the ball:

Brazuca itself (@brazuca) tweeted its delight at the news with the message: "I can't believe I've reached a million followers. You guys realise you're following a ball, right...? #ballin."

Adidas's first product with its own social media profile counts stars including Zinedine Zidane, Hugh Jackman, Samuel L. Jackson and even Pope Francis among its followers.

Brazuca, which has now amassed 1.35 million followers, features six HD cameras that have been streaming films capturing 360-degree action views in the run up to the tournament.

The clips are available online, offering fans a "ball's eye" perspective on the World Cup.

Following an international tour, the ball is now in Brazil and its Twitter account is offering updates, news and commentary throughout the tournament.
