It was the year of moms when it comes to Facebook Live videos.

On Thursday, Facebook released its lists of the most-watched Facebook Live video in Canada and the U.S., with mothers’ videos ranking first in both countries.

A video of an Alberta mom trying to teach her child how to tie his shoes tops the Canadian list.

In September, a video of Kirsten Johnson demonstrating an innovative way to tie shoes went viral.

At the time, Johnson told CTV News that she had tried to teach her son Rylan the traditional “bunny ears” method of shoe-tying, but he couldn’t seem to get it.

The former teacher then came up with another technique where she tied one knot, then tied another, but left a small loop at the top. Next, she took one lace and pulled it through the loop to the opposite side and did the same with the other lace. Finally, she pulled the laces tight and her son’s shoes were ready to go.

After her son got the hang of this method, Johnson shared it on Facebook Live in a video has been viewed millions of times.

That video was just one of the many that garnered millions of views in Canada in 2016.

In the United States, Facebook Live's most watched video in 2016 also featured a mother, but this time with a toy Chewbacca mask and an infectious laugh.

Candace Payne's parking lot video of herself laughing as she puts on the mask was viewed more than 162 million times on Facebook.

In the video, she admits her son will probably try to steal the toy away from her, but maintains the mask is hers.

The mask is designed to emit Chewbacca's distinctive roar every time the mouth moves, a feature that elicited non-stop laughter from Payne.

The mom of two shot the video after purchasing the toy while shopping for yoga pants.

"This is worth every penny," she says, in between laughing fits.

Payne's distinctive laughter, and sheer enjoyment of a Star Wars toy, resulted in appearances on late-night talk shows, free gifts, gift cards and an appearance on "Good Morning America."

Her video had roughly double the views of the second-ranked video, Ted Yoder's hammered dulcimer cover version of "Everybody Wants to Rule the World."

His interpretation of the 1980s classic, played on an instrument created in the Middle Ages, was shot in Yoder's backyard and ended on a shot of a raccoon his family had rescued.

Yoder has been playing the hammered dulcimer for nine years and says he is self-taught.

Videos taken on U.S. election night dominated the list, accounting for four of the top ten.

The list took strange turns too, with video of a truck which was carved out of wood racking up millions of views. A satirical look at the Pokemon Go phenomenon, dubbed "Chardonnay Go," also proved popular. That video featured a mother and her friends excitedly running around a neighbourhood hunting for glasses of the white wine.

A "live look" at election results from Super Deluxe Video rounded out the top 10 list, with its take on how the U.S. election results might be interpreted by someone on LSD. It consisted of four hours of an animated map of the United States on fire.
