The official launch may not be until September 4 but, as with so many other Samsung products in recent months, the cat already appears to be out of the bag and images and specification sheets regarding the Samsung Galaxy Gear watch are already spreading across the internet.

Although the actual device is expected to be a little more streamlined than the development version featured in most of the leaked images that adorn most of the world's major tech blogs Monday, information regarding its performance and features is believed to be accurate.

The device will have an OLED touchscreen display and a 4 megapixel camera integrated into the strap. It will support Bluetooth and wi-fi and as expected will be geared towards health and activity tracking rather than as a smartphone replacement.

As well as tracking steps taken and heart rate, the inclusion of the camera is apparently to photo and log meals eaten in order to track dietary requirements and calorie intake. Let's hope that all of those restaurants that have already outlawed the Instagramming of meals will make concessions if the photography is for medicinal purposes.

Away from health, the device will act as a second screen and control panel for a Bluetooth-connected Samsung smartphone and as such will display call and text alerts, music playlists and will support voice commands as well as swipes and gestures.

According to a recent interview with Samsung Executive Vice President of Mobile, Lee Young-hee, published in the Korea Times, the device will be aimed squarely at young trendsetters and was described as a "wearable concept device" rather than a smartwatch replacement.
