At CES 2015, LG will reveal a series of smart TVs with WebOS 2.0, the new version of its dedicated operating system. Updates to the platform will include enhanced responsiveness and a new offering of ultra high-definition (4K) content.
Above all else, this new version of WebOS will provide enhanced speed and smoother transitions, as seen through significantly reduced power-on boot time for the TV and quicker switching from the home screen to apps such as YouTube.
Through partnerships with Netflix, Amazon and others, LG says it will offer 4K content to customers with compatible screens through WebOS 2.0 starting in 2015.
Another new feature of the updated platform is My Channels, which lets users add their favorite live or set-top box channels to the Launcher Bar for easy access.
First presented by LG at CES 2014, the WebOS platform supports an array of apps -- which can be downloaded directly to the smart TV -- and offers access to a wide selection of VOD. The system is based on the discontinued WebOS mobile operating system, which LG purchased from HP in early 2013. So far, the Korean manufacturer claims to have sold five million WebOS TVs worldwide.
LG, which continues to promote its ultra high-definition ambitions, is also expected to come to CES 2015 with a mysterious 55-inch 8K TV (7,680x4,320 pixels).
CES 2015 takes place in Las Vegas from January 6-9.
