Amsterdam zoo Artis is celebrating a new arrival after its western lowland gorilla Sindy gave birth to a healthy baby.

Mother and newborn were both doing well Friday, with Sindy protectively cradling her baby as it was drinking her milk. The new arrival adds to the zoo's gorilla group, which is made up of a silverback male, three mature females and five young males.

Zoo spokeswoman Diane Borst says the baby's gender has not been established since its birth Thursday.

The delivery was also good news for the western lowland gorilla species, which is endangered primarily due to hunting and loss of habitat in its African homelands.
