Gartner has reported that 195.4 million touchscreen tablets were sold in 2013, representing a 68 per cent increase from the previous year.

With a 61.9 per cent market share, Android has surpassed iOS to become the leading OS on tablets.

Still in the leading position in 2012 with 52.8 per cent of the tablet market, Apple's iOS saw its share drop to just 36 per cent by the end of 2013.

The Android OS, meanwhile, saw its share jump from 45.8 per cent to 61.9 per cent over the year.

Far behind, Windows remains a minor player in the tablet OS market, accounting for 1 per cent of the market in 2012 and 2.1 per cent in 2013.

Among tablet manufacturers, Apple remains in the lead in 2013, when it sold 70.4 million iPads, or nearly 9 million more than in 2012. However, the strongest growth was seen from Samsung, which quadrupled its tablet sales over the year.

The brand shipped 8.5 million tablets in 2012, compared to 37.4 million in the following year.

Behind the top three are Asus (11 million), Amazon (9.4 million) and Lenovo (6.5 million).
